Christmas survived...almost

Well, I made all of my Christmas gift deadlines except for one. Dad got only one sock, but he seemed cool with it, on the plus side it was the best crocheted sock I've made yet. I thought the sock addiction would have worn off by now, but it has not. My goal for this year is to learn how to knit in the round so I can really get fancy!

I also didn't quite make my self imposed deadline to get another paper submitted by Christmas....well, the new year actually, but I still have two days right?

I have one complaint this morning, and that is this stinking rain. We were supposed to be cross country skiing in Vermont today...but alas I am home blogging because of the weather. Normally I would be cool with that, but this year I finally broke down and bought new skis. I've contemplated it for like the past 5 seasons and never did it. You see my skis were much too long for me, since we bought them when we thought I still had a little growing left in me, but...I stunted at the staggering height of 5'2" and still skied with the long skis....I got pretty good at it, they were really good skis and I did ok. But, now there is this new trend that all the skis are much shorter...and I mean much shorter, I convinced Mark to buy a set last year and his skis are 20 cm shorter then mine...that was until Tuesday, when I decided to take the plunge, and got my very own brand new skis, poles and junior size boots! (Yea, my feet stopped growing before I did). I'm going to plug a local business here: New England Ski and Scuba not only did they have a fairly decent selection, which in cross country terms means more than two styles of skis, decent prices, and nice help. They mounted and cut my poles right there...while I waited! Less than one hour start to finish (including my indecisive nature, trying on boots, measuring poles, etc) and my shiny new skis were in my car! And now they are in the mud room just begging to be used. The weather gods have foiled me again!

Anyways: skis, boots and poles all from alpina:
Added note: after posting I caught up on my blog reading and realized that Krista has tagged me. I will respond as soon as I figure out someone who a) has a blog to tag, b) might in the next 12 months read my blog!

Bad blogger

I've been a bad blogger. A whole month with nothing to post. Krista gave me the evil eye about it this morning so I decided to post.

Good News: I had a paper accepted to the Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology. Well, technically it's a note, but it's the first in print thing out there under my name as the primary author, so I'm very very excited about it.

Other than that tidbit, nothing new. Dissertation is a whopping 20 pages so far. (there is a scarcastic tone to that statement since at 20 pages I've barely scratched the surface) I'm diligently writing and trying to publish a variety of data. The lidar is in semi-retirement until I finish my degree and I'm going to present at 3 conferences next summer so I'm keeping busy on the school front.

Outside of school I've mainly been crafting away to finish all of my Christmas presents by the rapidly approaching deadline. Two are already out, one is wrapped, one is blocking, one needs to be seamed, one needs an edging, one is halfway done and one isn't started, so I'm heading off to progress further on that now.

random link: futureme.org Send an email to your future self. Kind of like that school project when you were a kid, write a letter when you're 10, the school mails it when your 18. Personally I found my crush on a very dorky boy to be excessively amusing 8 years later...so think of it as giving yourself a surprise laugh later on!

Happy Holidays everyone!

I am so mad at Microsoft

Ok. So, I've been a very good girl since I've been here. No TV, no internet, working like mad on my little laptop. This morning was just like any other. I got up. Took a shower. Got dressed. Chatted with Dr. M about my progress. Cooked some eggs. Dropped them all over the floor. (this should have been my first sign of things amiss). Ate what I didn't drop. Sat down to do some work. After a few hours of running programs and plotting data in excel, I was in the mood to do some writing. I'm working on a paper and a couple of abstracts that pull information from a variety of places. A lot of cutting and pasting. I'm working away. Make some changes, blah blah. Then I minimize my word document to copy something from another one. I click on it to maximize it again and POOF. Just like that word is closed. I think, I must of done something wrong. I open up, start again, and again, I try to access a document I have minimized and POOF. All my word documents closed. Word knows that it did something wrong because when I reopen it the autorecover information is there, but there is no indication of how or why. It's totally repeatable. I've now spent close to three hours, virus checking, adaware checking, windows updating, office updating, office repairing and anything else I can think of. I'm developing a severe hatred for Microsoft's blue progress bars and still. Minimize, maximize, POOF.

AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!

Anybody out there know how to fix this?

Pheww.

Nope, we didn't die on the road to College Staion, we made it safe and sound on Sunday and have been working like mad ever since, out the door at 7:30 and never back before 9. Oddly, my cell phone doesn't get reception at the hotel either, (How weird!) so no one be upset that I've been MIA. I'm pooped. But, I have spray data!

Off towards Las Cruces in the am.

Good night for now!

Texarkana...Again?

When Dad and I passed through here six years ago, I never thought I would be here again! But here I am in Texarkana. So far journey west #2 is going well. We have covered nearly 1500 miles in 3 days without incident...Well expect for Dr. Miller actually eating a Big Ugly and giving me horrible flashbacks to my Penn Stated days that is. One more day onto College Station and we bust out the lidar again.

the corn is down

FINALLY. Third times the charm apparently. The corn is chopped and I'm done with my connecticut field work. There was a breif moment of fear when some type of bolt on the tractor sheared off, but Bill was amazing and fixed it right up. I still think the corn is cursed and quite honestly never ever want to watch any scary movie with corn fields in it again. But it's done!!!!!

TGIF

Wow. Friday never felt so good. What a long week! Everytime I have to do fieldwork I forget how stressful it is on my whole body and then wonder why I'm so tired at the end of the day. You'd think I'd learn and like try to store up my energy or something.

Graduation looms farther and farther away ad more equipment breaks. The story of my life, I know. But the folks in Germany were mucho helpful and it looks like they might get us back on track without too much delay. (other then all the time it takes for something to get to germany!)

But on a good note: My paper is finally in print. Check out current abstracts look ma, I'm first on the list. Be proud!

A real post. I promise

So this is what's new. We have decided that we are inefficient at well, life in general. So to solve all of our problems, we need a dishwasher. I decided this at 8am, and as many of you know, I shouldn't really be allowed to think before at least 9. But, the thought stuck, so to the internet I went. Our kitchen is too small for a real dishwasher without doing a major remod, which we don't have time or money for right now, so we need a portable one. Can someone please explain to me why when you cut the size of a dishwasher by a quarter the price doubles. Best buy has one model that would be available to us. Apparently we are not in their special delivery zone so we can't order one. The store is three miles from my house, I don't understand this situation, three miles is too far to deliver a dishwasher that would fit in the back seat of my corolla??? So we went to look at this one model that they have in the store. Web price 139.99. There are two of them in the store, one without the connector kit or instructions for 99.99 and one in an "open box" for 219.99. WTF (sorry mom), but ?!?!? So off we went on the hunt. Bernie's sleazy sales guy, Sears $500 for a "portable" dishwasher that I couldn't even roll, we thought about lowes, but after the leaking washing machine incident two years ago I couldn't bear the thought...so we came home, sadly without a dishwasher :(. Back to the internet!

SO, I think we this one from the evil Walmart. It's cute right? Maybe I don't need a dishwasher after all.

In the meantime Mark is building a new microwave cart and pantry shelf for my mixer...in an attempt to make our kitchen more efficient. Right now I can't walk in there so I think we failed on that front too.

Since I've been pretty busy lately I haven't blogged in weeks...so I feel the need to leave at least a little tidbit to those of you who are still faithfully checking this thing. When I do have a moment of free time I have taken to reading this blog. And from there, I give you this IKEA story. Now I happen to love IKEA, but I know some of you don't so enjoy.

A whole weekend to make it up as we went along. Dinner and dancing with friends on friday. Working on cars on Saturday and ....ooooh the best part, the beach, a car show AND the dukes of hazzard movie on Sunday. Good friends and good times. Almost makes monday morning bearable!

WIP Wednesday and Ramblings

Well...back in the swing with craft night. I missed my girl time and I'm happy to have it back.
Here's the list:
1) crocheted shrug: 2 full sleeves
2) knitted sweater for hubby: back complete
3) knitted socks for hubby: one sock done, Cuff, top, heel and most of bottom done for second sock
4) Christmas gift #1 : 22% complete
5) Crocheted socks for me: 1 inch of one sock complete

And the yarn is piling up for a variety of baby blankets and Christmas gifts I have in mind....

So, it has occurred to me that since my return from NM, this blog has become boring. I initially had some concerns that it was because my life had gotten boring...but I realized, I just spend less time on the internet and therefore less time blogging. So, here is a little update of my life in the past couple of weeks.

I took a car trip to Ohio to see where they make longaberger baskets. Even got to weave my own. While to some of you this may seem to be an excessively long drive to do something quite boring. I grew up in a longaberger house, so seeing it live was quite neat for me. Plus, you can't trade anything in the world for quality family time!
immediately on return from Ohio, I hopped on a plane to Tampa to present at the ASAE annual meeting, I think my talk went ok so that was a success.
Meeting over, hop in a rental car and zip across Florida to Daytona Beach to visit one of my oldest friends...lot's of fun, plus, beach! nuff said.
Zip back to Tampa, Fly back home. Bam, like running into a rock I got that summer cold I complained about.
Flash forward a few days and just a touch of stuffiness left over, and a great visit with a couple of other old friends, one craft night later and here I am. All and all not a bad few weeks (minus the cold of course) . I hope the next few are a little more boring, or else I won't have any time for blogging!

Ug ug ug. I'm sick. I can't seem to kick it. This is the worst cold I've had in a while and it just won't quit. I'd really really like to join reality again soon. That and all the travel are the main reasons for not blogging...but I did manage to accomplish something this week before the cold hit full force and I wanted to share it.

Page one of my dissertation is complete....an no an actul page of writing! Woohoo. Just a million more to go!

bloggin again

Well. This heat has got me too tired to do anything but surf the web, so I decided maybe I should blog again....

Not much is new really, I've been working pretty hard on school stuff, but it never seems to get me anywhere, such is the life of a grad student.

Krista signed me up to be on her Relay for Life team, so it looks like I better work a little harder to get in shape before October. I'm taking donations so anyone interested let me know.

Ummm....nothing else, so I'm off to install the new version of itunes.

I'm a Yankee

Your Linguistic Profile:

45% General American English

40% Yankee

10% Upper Midwestern

5% Dixie

0% Midwestern

wonder where that 5% dixie came from???
Do you think it's a problem that I got out of bed at 2pm and couldn't decide if I wanted to eat eggs or frozen pizza so ate an ice cream bar instead?

Monday, April 25, 2005

This is neat

I have to credit not martha and therefore Krista indirectly for this:

"Automatic purse lighting system"

Awhile ago they were selling purses with these in them at target and I thought they were cool, but I didn't like the bags themselves (plus I need another purse like a hole in the head). Now I can just add the light to the purses I already have and like. Way cool!

Thoughts on Golf

I really can't understand why I'm having so fun at something I'm so bad at. Typically I would have given up by now, but I am really enjoying playing, and I'm getting a little better, I hit the ball always, just not as far as I should. I did have some very nice shots, but never actually put it in the hole. I only lost one ball all day. I hear that's not bad for my first time on a course. We're going again Friday. Maybe I'll get a little better.

I really want to blog something

...but I have nothing to say. I made mango bruschetta today for the Miller's open house. It was pretty good, although the mangos were a funny color. Everyone liked it and I haven't heard any reports of them being sick. One week until hubby arrives to rescue me. We are going to venture on to the real golf course tomorrow....gosh, I'm boring.

8am, 7am, 5am

These have been my bedtimes for that last three days! Ugh. No work tonight and I can't decide if that's good or bad. I feel like I should just stay on that nutty schedule. But I have to participate in the real world tomorrow, and then we're back in the field Monday night. Double Ugh. Oh well, I guess I'll just settle in to watch Lindsay's Lohen's remake to the parent trap and then decide what to do.

In honor of ShellyBean

This post is in honor of my sister who complains when I don't post. She has requested a new post everyday, but I don't think my life is that interesting.
Right now, I'm exhausted. We worked in the field from 7pm to 7:30am, which means I went to bed at 8. I slept til 1 this afternoon, but I'm not as young as I used to be and I feel like I was hit by a truck. We're heading back out at 11 tonight so I'm expecting another nap soon.

On the plus side, we got really great data and Carmen thinks that it will make me famous (among boundary layer meteorological community that is)

Since my brain can't process anything else I'm back to crocheting. I think it's going to be a shrug, but right now it's just cuffs. I also joined crochetville.org and they loved my gloves!

2:47

This is close enough. I'm off. Happy days is too sad, Arnold's burnt down. :(

2am

I'm trying to change my sleep pattern so I can stay up all night tomorrow to take data. My initial goal was to make it until 3 before I went to sleep...but I don't think I'm going to, especially since the best thing on tv at this hours is the brady bunch...ugh

Leftover Yarn

So I had some of the sock yarn left, and it seems maybe I'm not addicted to socks, but the yarn. I figured that it wasn't enough to make another pair of socks, besides, I think a person really only needs one pair of socks that are that multicolored. So I made myself a pair of handwarmers. I'm actually hoping it's cold tomorrow night so I can use them. Made up the pattern all by myself. Look at me go! Posted by Hello

Weekend update

Life is regular here. Since the last post two more trips to the driving range with some improvement. A visit to the Borderland book festival (who knew there were enough books about this region to have a whole festival). A day in the desert to set up the instruments, and a trip out to the missile range to see some talks. Now it's time to get as much sleep as possible for an all nighter in the field tomorrow. So, nighty night.

Life Update

Well, we finished project one and now we are onto project two. Two more weeks and Mark comes to rescue me. I'm all by my lonesome again since I dropped Wenli off at the airport this morning. So the post frequency may increase, as will my sock output. But it's warm and sunny so I'm happy.

crazy crazy socks

Why would Lace and sport socks be the same category? This is one of the ads adsense posted on my page and I was just curious. They do have a fabulous selection of toe socks and tights, so if you need either of these items check it out.

Random Rants

I have two random rants for today.

1) (I suppose this really is more a piece of advice than a rant). Should you be driving anywhere, and come across caution tape quite purposely blocking the road, there is most likely a good reason why someone went through the trouble to put it there. Please remember this before you proceed to drive through it. If you should arrive at a second such road block, it should be obvious to you that some really did mean to put it there and please, as the tape says, proceed with caution or find another route. I think that this advice should be heeded even more so when you are on a "research facility" with many signs clearly marking the area as such. "Research" is really another way of saying "we don't know what the heck we are doing yet". In this case, dangerous chemicals, radioactive materials and yes, harmful lasers may be present. Be forewarned Elephant Butte Irrigation District brush burning dude: next time you have to pee, I might shoot you with my laser when you drive recklessly through my field!!!!!

2) Does anyone else out there find any need for a journals "guide for authors" to be 79 pages long?????? I just want to know how to format the paper, where to send it, and what font I should use. Five pages tops. I don't need flowcharts. (yes plural). It seems the information I need appears between pages 22 and 53! On about page 26 I fell asleep so it looks like this paper is going to have to wait yet a few more days to go out the door. I do have a favorite quote from this brilliant document, which all you academic types out there might find amusing. "If a manuscript is rejected, or major revisions are requested, it is not productive for the author to get angry or enter into acrimonious correspondence with the editor" Reading this document is causing me to have an acrimonious conversation with my computer! Lord help the editor should I be rejected :)

So I have chewed enough of your time for now. It was a very long field day and I had a million other things I meant to post but they will have to wait for another day. Time for sleep

PS. The blogger spell check is not working so ignore typos please.

Sock sizing dilemma

I thought a little update on the socks would make everyone have a good laugh. So I started the socks while Mark was still here, about 2.5 inches in I made him try them on and they were too small. So I ripped them out and started again. Making sure to make them bigger. Here you can see the result on my own foot. Fits me around the ankle, but a bit too big in the heel. I'm unsure weather to continue. The foot part is big enough to fit Mark's feet, if he can get the ankle over them. But if he can't get them on, they won't fit any other person. What's a girl to do? I guess it's back to the sweater. Sorry socks.

Chocolate chip mittens on the web!!

Oh the memories of those warm fuzzy hands.....Now they've gone global so the whole world can make their very own chocolate chip cookie mittens. Since one of mine is long lost. I'm adding these to my to do list.... Right after mark's sweater, and his socks, and oh yea that sweater for me....

The pattern

A kit to buy in distinctively none chocolate chip colors. Apparently they've gotten hip.

Well Here is a little update about that last week or so. We got some really great data on Thursday even though it was really cold. Last night I taught Wenli how to knit and you can see her impressive handiwork here. She was really good and really quick at it. Today we went to a small Native American Pow-wow at the campus and now I'm trying to motivate myself to finish this stupid paper. That's about it. :) Posted by Hello

Rini is a real name!!!!

Imagine my surprise. That silly nickname. I'm settling down to watch my favorite Gilmore Girls, which is incidentally the repeat of the one that I never saw when the basketball game upstaged it. One of the guest stars was Rini Bell, so I looked it up. It's a real name and not very popular either. Hum...

Brief update

Ok, so this will be a quick one because it's late, I'm tired and a little sick.

Great trip to Guadalupe Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands with Mark (pictures aren't so great so just check out the actual websites. They pretty much show what we saw)

Electrical socket kind of shorted and we had to call an electrician, spent two days with no light in the kitchen with the refrigerator plugged into an extension cord.

Easter Sunday with the Millers, one of Mark's old professors and an array of other interesting folks. Plus got yummy goodies in the mail from mom and sis...yumm godiva.

Sick today but took field data anyways. Plus mark left, so not a great day, but we did get really good data for once. Take the good and the bad together. One step closer to home, so that deserves a woohoo!

Clear skies everywhere but overhead! Proof of my bad weather luck. I'm thinking of renaming this blog to bad weather girl's adventures. Then I have a record of data to send to the annals of improbable research, no one has luck this bad. Seriously this cloud sat over us the entire time we took data, five minutes after we finished it disappeared. I actually have lidar data of cloud viega!!! Posted by Hello

Ok...So I know I'm a geek

So, long story short mark needs some thin socks. While looking for a pattern I came across this site. http://www.planetshoup.com/easy/tips/math.shtml And I think it is totally cool, I never knew that those numbers could work that way. Nifty. I think once I finish the sweater and maybe those socks I'm going to try out that mobius scarf.

Wonder Woman Rocks!

In honor of the wonder women underoos Krista posted, which I did have as a kid. The writer from Buffy, and the actress from Gilmore Girls, two of my favorite WB shows are going to make a live action Wonder Women Movie! Cool beans.

Today we visited the ruins at Dripping Springs. This was once a hotel and resort, and it was built only 10 years before our own house! There was also a sanatorium for people with TB. It was a very nice hike! Posted by Hello

Happiness is my hubby

WOOHOOO Marky is here. Two whole weeks with my fabulous hubby. We are going to have big fun. Today he helped me get all my walkie talkies working and took me to the movies to see the Incredibles. Tomorrow we might go hiking, and Monday if the weather holds I might actually do some work. Hooray for hubby. :)

Happiness is my hubby

Yea!!! Marky is here to visit! He's just as handsome as I remember and I'm so happy to see him! Big fun planned while he's here! And it looks like the rain is going to hold off long enough to finally start this project on Monday. Yippee happy day :)

where am i?

I just say a commercial for the Las Cruces "pothole posse". Apparently potholes are such a problem that there is a hotline you can call to report them. An online form too. Here

Isn't that cowboy cute ;)

Does anyone else find this funny?

Pictures from our white sands trip:

Here are a few shots from our trip out to White Sands National Monument, a little known park about 50 miles from Las Cruces, famous for being on the missile range, this is one of the most peaceful places I've ever been.

Book you should read

So while shelly was here and falling asleep at a regular time like normal people do, I was staying up reading this book I just couldn't put down. It's been a while since I've been compelled to stay up to the wee hours reading so I felt I should share it with everyone. I don't know why I couldn't put it down, it's not suspenseful or anything, but just so wonderfully written that it was great. Everyone should read it. It's "The book of Joe" by Jonathan Tropper. So I looked it up and either it's a sleeper and hasn't really caught on yet, or I'm living under a rock because Brad Pitt bought the movie rights. It only took me three nights to get through so if you're looking for something to read, go for it.

Big Fun with Shelly!

Yea for sisters!!! They are fun. We had a great visit, went to Mexico, hiked in White Sands and ate yummy ice cream. I'm sad she has to go. But it was definitely fun!

And you thought my weather luck was a joke...

Heard on NM NPR this morning. "Wettest year in New Mexico's recorded weather history"

Anyways, krista's comment on my last post led me to kill some time on knitty.com and some of their links. I think this Ipod cozy might be the cutest one I've seen yet (except for the one I already have (thanks krista!) Just thought I should post.

no more numbers.....

Why is it that I seem to need to do everything four times before I get it right? I think that I'm going to be a pretty bad PhD.

On other fronts, another half inch of rain this weekend has our project sinking another four inches into the mud! Still on schedule for now, but one more drop and we're sunk!!!! Don't worry, I'm not, I'm positive that my bad weather luck has to change sometime soon.

Check another one off the book list

Finished catch-22 today. Why I didn't read it sooner then this point in my life I just don't know. But if you haven't read it it's worth reading. I loved it. I think I'm going to go to Barnes and Noble and get the sequel immediately. Humm, that won't shrink the pile of books that I still want to read and have already bought. What a quandary. Oh well, I'm off to the movies for a little less intellectual stimulation.

ahhh. back online

People who write viruses should have very bad things happen to them.

On another note, a better one. MY SISTER'S ENGAGED! Happiness is a good thing!

Random thoughts

Ok, so I know I stole this from Krista, but it's a good site for my crafting buddies. Impressions

Other news. No rain today so we actually made some progress! Yippee....funny thing was it was thwarted by some Connecticut rain we apparently imported inside our instruments. Apparently they weren't really waterproof like they said. Oops. No worry, the ever prepared girl scout had a spare.

Speaking of the girl scouts. They have some fun games if you're really bored and looking for entertainment here

Feeling Deprived

How come I never took a family vacation here?

More Progress!

More progress! Ok, so it's pretty simple, and just a basic start page but it's still progress. Click Here

Other news. Broke my own rule and actually stepped foot in Texas again today. Remembered why I said I wouldn't do that again :). But in all seriousness El Paso wasn't that bad some cool antique shops and I finally got a colored juicer!

Uh Oh...I don't have anything interesting to say

Since my last post it has been brought to my attention that others are actually reading my blog. Hi Mom! Suddenly I am very concerned that I have nothing interesting to say and that I am boring the heck out of everyone out there. My days here in rainy New Mexico consist mainly of lamenting the rain. We can't get to the equipment because the roads to the farm are dirt and therefore now mud. In the fieldwork lull I started to take a look at that pesky dissertation thing and found out my data is wrong. Yesterday I discovered that there is TV in the house (I thought it had been turned off), and have since become a TV junkie.....oh yea, I might go golfing tomorrow! Check out Krista's blog http://kristaleigh.blogspot.com she has an interesting post about a monkey that need a name.

Trying out google adsense

I don't know I got conned into it...Who knows maybe I'll make some money. What do I have to loose right? It's not like anyone actually reads this blog except Krista!

Hail and sun?

I just witnessed the oddest weather event ever! I'm sitting at the kitchen table and there are windows to the left and right. To the left, I see blue skies and sun. To the right. HAIL. Actually hail. Enough to make the ground white for all of 10 minutes. Now everything is sunny! What is the deal with New Mexico?

And the laser fires on

Brief scare today when the laser decided not to fire...But I kicked it's butt back to working. I'm a bit bummed there was promise of warmer weather on this trip, but Iowa is butt cold and apparently it's not customary for hotels here to have hot water. Is it too late to rethink this trip?

Safe and sound

Hi Everyone!

Quick update. Dr. Miller and I are safe and sound at the Iowa House hotel on the lovely campus at the University of Iowa. The last forty miles across Ohio were a killer, but Indiana and Illinois flew right by, and before I knew it here we were! I'll be here for another week and then back in the van and off to New Mexico. I'm looking forward to the warmth.

webpage plans stunted by my messy computer

Well...starting the blog inspired me tonight. It's been years since I coded any html so it was slow going. Once I got going though. Finding all the files and images and where I even saved my code took all night...Oh well, tomorrow is another day

Welcome to my Blog

I decided to try out this blog thing today. One can't really say it's out of boredom or anything like that because I definitely have enough things to keep me occupied in life. I think this is just part of my New Year's resolution to be more interesting. Also, I'm leaving on a research trip for three months and I thought this might be a good way for people to keep up on my life when I stop answering the phone!

Please comment on anything you feel like
